The first pad was made in 1888 but in India it was in 1998, which is 110 years later. Women in India have been using pad only for the last 23 years. It is 2021 and Menstruation still is a huge TABOO in the society. It is unfortunate that women and girls still use cloth instead of a pad. Many educated women do not know what tampons and menstrual cups are, let alone the illiterate women. 64% of women in India still use cloth when they are menstruating. And small pad donation drives can change that. A pad in India costs 20 to 40 rupees and it’s unfortunate that there are women who still cannot afford it. There are other menstrual products that a woman can use other than sanitary napkins but are not aware about them.
The fact that there have been 1600 victims in 2020 of acid attack and only 250 to 300 cases are reported every year. There are so many cases that go unreported every single day. In 2013, the Supreme Court had passed an order prohibiting the over-the-counter sale of acid to regulate its sale across the country. The top court order stated that only select stores with permits be allowed to sell acid, that too after checking the ID cards of buyers. Yet there are acid attacks that take place on a very high yearly rate.
There are so many diseases that only women can get and possibly die because of it. Approximately 3% of the female population will die due to breast cancer. In India, it is estimated that there are 96,922 new cervical cancer cases and 60,078 deaths and ranked second among women cancers. Furthermore, there are only three reports of Rett syndrome from India. One of the symptoms are that there is loss of speech and the worst part is that there is no cure for it. But if the girl and family can detect it earlier then the pain and/or effect of this syndrome can be reduced. Like such there are so many more diseases that women can get and due with them or because of them, and the worst part is that women without any access to professional medical help do not even know the cause of the pain that they are going through, have gone through or have died because of it..
